Kevan Smith - November 2010, Boise

Nov 4 2010 - Nov 28 2010 @ coffeehouse

I graduated from the College of Idaho in 1981 with a B.A. in Art, and then received an MFA from the University of Idaho in 1985. Since then, I have shown my work in numerous group and solo exhibitions, including a one-person show at the Boise Art Museum in 2000. I have also received a number of awards, including Best in Show at the Tacoma Art Museum Biennial in 1999, and a fellowship in 2003 from the Idaho Commission on the Arts.

The fundamental concern of my work continues to be an investigation of spatial and chromatic relationships. Experimentation and intuitive choices are at the core of my painting strategy. Beginning with a prescribed palette of just a few colors, I then improvise within that framework, not unlike the structure of jazz music. From there, it becomes a game of move and countermove involving color, value and texture. Aesthetic quality is the goal, and only my eye can tell me when that has been achieved.
